Below are photos from the Chapter's events, from community outreach to our series of invited lectures. Enjoy!

26 October 2016

Community Outreach:

UVA's STEM Outreach Day

In conjunction with the OSA and SPIE student chapters at UVA, the Photonics Society participated in the University's STEM outreach day. Optics demonstrations were given to local elementary school children on 26 October 2016.

20 March 2017

Community Outreach:

Elementary School Outreach #1

The IEEE Photonics Society volunteered at a local elementary school, teaching 2nd and 3rd graders about optics, through hands-on demonstrations.

28 March 2017

Invited Lecturer Series:

Dr. Meredith Hutchinson

Dr. Hutchinson was the perfect candidate for the Chapter's first invited lecturer! She presented on her work at NRL, and her involvement with IPS and Women in Photonics. The lecture was engaging and informational and a gem for the 6 female UVA students in attendance (of over 26 total attendees)! In to a great talk, Dr. Hutchinson talked with us about further growing the relationship between UVA and NRL, and perhaps facilitating a student poster session where NRL engineers and recruiters can meet with graduate students here at UVA.

28 March 2017

Invited Lecturer Series:

Dr. Paul Morton

Dr. Paul Morton, the founder, C.E.O. and C.T.O. of Morton Photonics Inc., presented a seminar entitled "Photonic Integration for RF Photonics Systems."

20 March 2017

Community Outreach:

Elementary School Outreach #2

The IEEE Photonics Society volunteered at a local elementary school, teaching 2nd and 3rd graders about optics, through hands-on demonstrations.

01 December 2017

Invited Lecturer Series:

Dr. Shamsul Arafin

Dr. Shamsul Arafin, an Assistant Project Scientist at UC Santa Barbara, presented a seminar entitled "Chip-scale optical frequency synthesis based on optical phase-locked loop." The talk was held on 01 December 2017 and was co-hosted by the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at UVA.

07 December 2017

Invited Lecturer Series:

Professor Daniel Wasserman

Professor Daniel Wasserman, an Associate Professor at UT Austin, presented a seminar entitled "The Mid-Infrared as an Optical Playground." The talk was held on 07 December 2017.

16 March 2018

Invited Lecturer Series:
